Mercury Retrograde in Capricorn January 21-February 11, 2015

We are in that magic time again, Mercury retrograde – the big astrology scapegoat. Mercury retrograde has gotten a bad reputation for sure. Some of it the “bad rep”is justified, but much of it is overstated or at least misunderstood (like most things in astrology).

,… article continued

When a planet goes retrograde it appears to be moving backward relative to our place on Earth. At those times, Mercury as the inner (and outer) “messenger” backs up and reflects on itself. This makes it more internal. But here’s the thing, this “reflection” takes the form of external things (like phones, computers, conversations with others) fouling up – to get us to see the truth of how much we are really listening to the messages in our life.

Notice the picture above. There are  3 smiling kids, oblivious to the 2 dogs snarling at each other. If this happened in a Mercury retrograde cycle, perhaps one of the dogs would be biting one of the children or each other.

That would surely be seen as something “bad” by the kids – and the parents of the kids. Yet would anyone looking objectively  and with discrimination (Mercury) be surprised that either of these dogs would bite a child or each other?

I am struck by how the children’s smiles are not that much different than the snarling teeth of the dogs. Have you ever noticed that smiles are a lot like snarling teeth? Both are used defensively in the same way. Phony smiles, nervous smiles are a way to deflect attention away from our fear and anger. It is fine to wear a defensive smile in the moment, rather than “bite the head off” of someone who is getting on our nerves. But eventually we need to get to the bottom of the annoying situation and the part of us that is getting triggered.

Mercury retrograde is a good time to go back and revisit things that are not being communicated clearly by you, and that includes your lack of good comprehension (listening). That is where the disconnect starts. Notice outer situations where you are being phony or avoiding engagement, and trace that discomfort to the source. Especially now, as the Nakshatra of mercury retrograde in Shravana (hearing) and the capacity to listen to the messages of the Cosmos and get the message.

In a more mundane sense, this example of the kids and the dogs can be directly associated with something like, your printer failing just when you need it during Mercury retro. You are shocked  by it, but it is unsurprising to anyone who sees the way you handle technology and gadgets.

A few questions:
1. What do you “tune out/avoid” because it makes you angry?
2. What do you “tune out/avoid” because it scares you?
3. Where do you feel “overwhelmed” by details?

These are areas of life that are likely to “mess up” between now and February11.

You can thank Mercury retrograde for this.
