This is traditionally a difficult Nakshatra due to its tendency to cause sudden change and even calamity. The deity of this Nakshatra is called “Nirriti”,.. which literally means “calamity”. This is one deity in the Rg Veda the people were afraid of.
Below is a video description of the Mercury retrograde cycle.
Here is a verse from the Rig Veda about Nitrriti.
Rig Veda – Chapter 10 – Verse 59
“1. His life hath been renewed and carried forward as two men, car-borne, by the skilful driver. One falls, then seeks the goal with quickened vigour. Let Nirrti depart to distant places.
2 Here is the psalm for wealth, and food, in plenty: let us do many deeds to bring us glory. All these our doings shall delight the singer. Let Nirrti depart to distant places.
3 May we o’ercome our foes with acts of valour, as heaven is over earth, hills over lowlands. All these our deeds the singer hath considered. Let Nirrti depart to distant places.
4 Give us not up as prey to death, O Soma still let us look upon the Sun arising.Let our old age with passing days be kindly. Let Nirrti depart to distant places.”
It is remarkable to hear a deity referred to in this way, as it is thought to bring about the wrath of the negative influence to openly cheer the defeat of any force – urging her to “depart to distant places.” The concept of roots, uprooting, sustenance threatened, etc. are important in this Nakshatra.
Stellium in Sagittarius- Fighting the Good Fight
Sagittarius is a sign of righteousness, law (man-made and God made law) forward vision and thinking. Mars in Sagittarius brings a lot of enthusiasm in fighting for what we think is right. It is easy to see the stark contrast in the battle between good and evil – however we define that.
There are several important struggles going on in our country (the United States) and the world right now. Of course, there is the age-old struggle of the wealthy wanting to get wealthier, buying politicians who will deliver that, and even the good politicians being corrupted by a system that does not facilitate righteousness.
But it seems like now these things become even more shrill , the language even harsher and the stakes even higher, the compromises more costly. Common sense (Mercury) seems to be one more casualty of the desire to win and advance the agenda, whatever that agenda might be. Of course, those with the most money that can buy the most influence often shape the debate and influence/prevail in the end.
These issues are powerful and at the forefront now. The differences between Mercury and Jupiter are greatly dramatized, so are the influences on Mars and Rahu. Let me explain.
Jupiter and Mercury – Show Me the Money
As it relates to money, Mercury (and Saturn) are actually related to cash, what’s in your hand and what you actually have to spend. Jupiter is related to “wealth”, the great abstraction which gives us hope (big Jupiter keyword) that one day things will be better, we will have more, be larger and able to expand. As we mature, we value expansion through the pursuit of wisdom and spiritual knowledge – seeing that as the greatest form of “wealth” .
Mercury is related to the nervous system connected to the moment, making adjustments in real time through ideas, language, words. Jupiter is about Universal Time, larger themes, the bigger picture and where things are going “one day”. As such, Jupiter is related to prospecting, and Mercury to how much money we actually have.
Jupiter has to do with philosophies while Mercury is very much the devils advocate, making sure that all of these big abstract ideas make sense in a practical way. As relates to a budget for instance, Mercury wants to be sensible and spend based on what you have. Jupiter projects into the future based on any number of abstractions in the present – philosophies about wealth distribution, how things may turn out based on investments, etc.
Like all planets, the divine forces of nature, Jupiter and Mercury together can be very powerful. Mercury will make practical adjustments that allow us to put the big picture and a sense of “righteousness” (Jupiter) into practice by organizing all the details. This allows us to manage our budget properly by not overspending, yet looking toward the future. It also allows us to advance spiritually by not just “believing in” some philosophy or religion, but also taking time to understand it, study it and implement the practices in our life.
As it relates to present economic situation and the hostile rancor over the budget, we see something entirely different. The potential for good communication, which brings a sense of fairness, equality and a realistic assessment of the facts in figures, is hard to come by now.
Mercury in Sagittarius puts that flexible, fast and detail oriented mind into the realm of philosophy, exaggeration, hyperbole and fiery rhetoric. The close association with Mars and Rahu, both energies of battle and destruction, show the potential for deceit and a “win at all costs” attitude — not to mention an abuse of power.
Dancing in The Shadows
Rahu is an especially lustful energy, where we have an insatiable thirst for some type of experience we’re hoping will give power. Rahu has been in Mula since early September 2010. If you remember, Mula means “roots”. It is symbolized by a bundle of roots tied together. There are two major global pieces of legislation designed to outlaw/criminalize the use of roots, herb or homegrown food and vegetables – one in the United States and one in the EU. In fact, it is already on the books, that after April 2011 in the EU, it will be illegal to use herbal medicines in all of Europe.
In the United States an equally audacious battle over food is being waged. The FDA is poised to outlaw anyone selling food they’ve grown themselves, making it a criminal offense – for starters. Of course, these laws are being proposed as a form of “protection” – a distorted (Rahu) Mars energy. This is the deceptive, shadowy side of Rahu – saying and doing what needs to be done in order to get more power.
Now is a time of diligence where we must pay attention to what is being said by others (Mercury), fight for what is right (Mars in Sagittarius) and be careful trusting too quickly what others say AND what we ourselves may rush to believe.
The Inner Game
In each of us the same battle of right and wrong is taking place now. We can all feel this inner war being waged between forces of good and evil in our mind. Perhaps it is a struggle between your philosophies and ideas about you are, and how much you’re actually putting into practice. Ask yourself:
1. Do I walk the talk?
2. Can I explain and do I actually understand the things I “believe in”?
3. Do I convey those things I know and understand with compassion or do I talk over people?
4. Am I coercive and manipulative in battle or am I sincerely interested in the truth, even if it makes me look bad?
We often miss a great opportunity when Mercury goes retrograde. We tend to focus on things like computers messing up, details getting mixed up, etc. Mercury retrograde is an excellent time to ask yourself these questions and check-in about how much you actually understand what you’re saying, what you believe in and how well you’re able to accommodate others needs and adjust to unexpected things.
Best wishes,
Sam

AUGH! This is the day my lawyer is going to meet my ex to go over the divorce agreement! How about a ritual to ensure he nails it on the first shot? It's taken 3.5 YEARS to get to this point!
Sam, this is excellent! I've been so bored w/run-of-the-mill write ups on ME Retrograde by some astrologers who blog, but your presentation is multi-level, richly textured, interwoven w/contemporary themes, potential dangers & opportunities.
I like the fine distinctions between ME, Sag and Jupiter qualities. I was chuckling over my own patterns when I get carried away by "big ideas" but ignore the stuff that ME watches over. Your presentation is balanced & intelligent, very timely Mercury qualities. Big thanks.
Fascinating! My Venus is in Moola Star in the 10th with natal Mars at 29 degrees Sag. The universe is fractal..my primary issue right now is food. I get feedback everytime i eat– my body immediately lets me know this is good or this is bad. The "doctor" insists I need to inject insulin, when I say no, he threatens to not write me an excuse from work when i need rest -distorted Mars/Rahu energy.
I eat a lot of home grown/local foods and use Ayurveda, herbs, remedies and sacred rituals. Big Pharma wants to be the only game in town, keeping us alive as long as we are profitable to them. Interestingly my arthritis and inflammation have ceased during this elimination process. Thank the Goddess for I am in Venus dosha, Venus Moola Star activation, bringing my karma to me: learning to take the bitter (liver -jupiter) with the sweet (pancreas Venus) and let no man deceive me (mercury retro in moola star conj venus. I love astrology it definitely gives one a leg up in life.
If nothing else, you have given me great respect for Mercury. I have been relying on it much more lately due to all the other factors flying about.
I agree with Savitri, Mercury must be the most downplayed force ever. I used to think Mercury was the most boring planet ever and would just gloss over it. Now I highly respect it.
Thanks!
Just finished watching this video (for the second time). Feeling grateful for this astrological weather report! ..And also for the very best explanation of Mercury I've ever heard!!
I have strong Mercury in my chart (Mercury with Mars and then Sun all in Gemini~5th house), and I relate deeply to how you described the way Mercury operates!
In the end, you mention the highest function of Mercury is geared toward Jnana Yoga. Mars close to Mercury (retrograde) gives this vigor of intellectual Self-enquiry, which, ultimately leads us Beyond. What an inspiring way to think about focusing our attention this coming week, despite the potential setbacks! Thanks again, Sam!
Very much look forward to your video on the December 21st lunar eclipse. I'm guessing this relates back to the June 26th eclipse we had this year (which fell on my Birthday)..boy, that was intense!…
