Solar Eclipse in Gemini – July 11

Filed in Featured Articles, News by on July 11, 2010 • views: 3416

The eclipse of July 11, 2010 has many fascinating features when looked at through the lens of Vedic astrology. The sun/moon conjunction will occur around 12:30 in the afternoon Pacific time. It happens around 25° of sidereal Gemini, in the Nakshatra of Punarvasu. This Nakshatra literally means “return of the light”. It is ruled by Jupiter, the great giver, the great benefic.

The ruling deity of this Nakshatra is called Aditi. She is like a cosmic Divine mother. She gave birth to the “Adityas”, incarnations of the sun god (Surya), sent to protect the Earth and maintain creation. Adityas include: Bhaga (God of delight and ruler of Purva Phalguni), Aryaman (God of propriety and ruler of Uttara Phalguni), Savitur, (God of manifestation and ruler of Hasta) and other deities which ruler over things like friendship, seasons and etc. This is a very hopeful section of the zodiac and shows a skilled, gentle, caring and protective nature.

The influence of Jupiter, the planetary ruler of this Nakshatra, is well-known to bring luck, hope and optimism to situations. This is quite good, especially now, considering Jupiter is in his own sign, Pisces. A few other features of the eclipse chart also look very positive.

Mercury (the ruler of Gemini) is exchanging signs with his ruler (the moon). When planets exchange signs this way, they form a powerful glue that tends to hold things together, even if there are challenges. In this case there are. Mercury does not like being in Cancer generally. When this happens, excessive emotion overwhelms our precision with details. However, the exchange between Mercury and the moon will likely show that in spite of our communication problems or recent lapses, now is a time when we can make progress.

Also, importantly, Jupiter is casting a favorable aspect on transiting Mercury at the moment of the eclipse. The trinal aspects of Jupiter confer gurus grace, blessings and wisdom. Both Jupiter and Mercury will be in water signs, adding luck and skill to issues related to water and feeling.

I know many astrologers consider eclipses to be negative, I don’t necessarily. I see them more as rolls of the dice. Often, the stakes are raised and certain karmic issues get pushed the point of crisis and/or redemption. They can show big winners and big losers.

The Outer World Implications of This Eclipse:

There are several news items that show this current eclipse cycle, and this moment in time very well.

#1 Gulf Oil Crisis
Not surprisingly, this eclipse weekend shows dramatic possibilities in this 2.5 month old crisis. On saturday, the day before the eclipse, a containment cap was removed to make way for a newer and hopefully more efficient one. This tactic means oil will flow unimpeded until a new, better cap is installed. This is a high-risk proposition, but may yield a very high reward if successful. In addition, there are plans to bring in more powerful oil collecting ships in a more coordinated effort. It is specualted that these steps could reduce the gusher to a trickle – until the relief wells are finished. Given the nature of the astrological indicators described above, my feeling is there will be success in this plan or at least an improvement in the situation. In this high-stakes role of the dice, my feeling is God’s grace will be operating and the Divine mother (Aditi, the ruler of Punarvasu) will allow her foolish children to heal her – and hopefully learn from this mistake.

US, Russian Spy Scandal
How strange to visit this issue! This is a very “Ketu in Gemini” story. Gemini is related to intelligence, information, skills, communications of all sort and Ketu is related to things that are hidden, precise, from the past and potentially explosive. The transit of Ketu through Gemini has us improving these Gemini areas of life. But in the process we discover flaws and chinks in the armor. How interesting that each country discovered intelligence/communication leaks and decided to swap Spy for Spy (I think MAD magazine used to call it Spy vs Spy). This seemed like a real throwback to another era. But this is the nature of Ketu to complete Karmas, to finish them. This transit takes place in the first and seventh House of the United States chart. The first house is the United States, the seventh House is foreign countries. Pretty dead-on there.

Supreme Court Nomination Controversy
This is the second Supreme Court nomination in the last year, the last one happened with the Sun also in Gemini, aspected by Jupiter. If we look at Sagittarius as the first house of the United States chart, having Rahu transiting through the first house now (since last November) makes perfect sense that there will be a shakup of power in the justice system. Sagittarius is a sign of law. The very country itself was founded on principles of law and concepts such as “the separation of church and state”, “three independent branches of government (a system of checks and balances)”. By the way, Kagan’s confirmation hearings began Monday, June 28, after a controversy filled weekend which happened to coincide with the last lunar eclipse in Sagittarius two weeks ago.

Stoning of Iran Woman / Women
This story highlights the need for judicial progress in fundamentalist countries and how the role of technology (Gemini, Ketu) can be a liberating force, exposing these barbaric practices (Ketu=cruelty, the past). Again, this is very “Ketu in Gemini”. Exposing something hidden and dirty and finding a better way to do it. Something else of immense astrological importance here, last year a similar type of exposure occurred when a young Iranian woman was killed protesting, Neda was her name. At the time I conducted research which showed a Venus/Mars conjunction in Aries to be prominent at similar times when the rights of women have been at the forefront of influencing fundamentalist Islamic law, for good or ill. I will add Mars/Venus in Leo to that list. Let’s say Venus/Mars in fire signs.

Fidel Castro Suddenly Reappears
Hello!,.. dictator from the past reappears the day before the Sun (the King) is eclipsed by Ketu (the past). ‘Ole Fidel is a gambler, that’s for sure. I guess the day the cosmic casino opens is as good a day as any for him to reemerge. And check this out,.. Ketu is said to be “inhaling smoke” – Castro is known/identified as a Cigar smoker – from the country known for the best smokes. If someone says “I had a great Cuban today”, what would you think? A Cuban hot dog, a Cuban hooker?,.. no, a Cuban cigar.. SMOKIN’ – haha ~ !

Personal Implications of This Eclipse

Apply the situations above to your life. What high risk gamble are involved in now? What oil gusher are you trying to plug? Is it spewing like never before right now? Have you ordered a new containment cap or is it just more propoganda from the inner CEO, overstated ego-damage control in hopes of quieting the real voice of truth?

We all have our inner spies at war with each other now and long forgotten, cigar smoking communist dictators are showing up in our heads, resucitating our inner “Cold War”. You thought you had finished with such things, only to find there is an angry mob in your head, showing up to stone the adulterer!

We must take these lessons to heart and work to drill deeply into the hidden resevoirs of power at the center of our being, our earth. This energy source is inexhaustible. We need to improve our communications, skills and adapt them to the new world. Revise our business practices to maximize technology and conserve resources. And yes, that means things like more electronic communication when possible/less wasting paper/less consuming fuel unless necessary.

Also more humor and flexibility is needed. We all need to lighten the *F* up around certain things,… especially some of the *spiritual* people or those with the spiritual ego. Sorry, this is where I shoot my mouth off and p*ss some people off, but I think it’s true. We need to put the anger away because it is does no good to express outrage. Consistent, determined and rational actions and communications oriented toward the highest and most long-term benefit is how we need to proceed, in my opinon (the dignity of Jupiter, aspecing Mercury and Saturn and ruling the eclipise Nakshatra bodes well for several months of progress based on these ideals).

No one ever “changed the world” not even the most powerful being (who by the way, I think I have actually met). She (Amma) first learned the nature of Self, the rest followed. “The world” does not exist, it is a bunch of individuals. It is you and me listening to each other even when we act like fearful, angry idiots. I have watched Amma so patiently listen to the same stupid, mundane and average things (that I have no patience for) for years and years. Pure love in action, one moment after the next. Pure bliss in action, one moment after the next. No need for food, bathroom, nothing. Just an unbroken connection to the source of love that overflows everything in its wake. And know well, my friend, I am not preaching to you about these things, because I am totally implicated in this selfishness too, up to my eyeballs.

But I am lucky to have such an example, and there are many such examples now and they are more accessible than ever. I truly believe we will get through this transition that is happening in our world. Every dark cloud of negative possibility that we see now is so scary because it is obscuring the light, which is also incredibly bright now. Since, in truth we are that pure light, the dark moments feel like a tragic loss of self. We feel eclipsed – then we collapse into fear/we can’t see ourselves. But the Sun is always there – existing behind the dark clouds – eternal, giving. It is the ocean of light and love. It is the truth.

That which is true and real can never be lost or eclipsed. Anything that was lost or can be lost was never real or true to begin with. It was just a shadow, a product of the indifferentiated Self (Sun/Paramatman) reflected in consciousness (The moon/Jivatman) expressed through form (ascendant/the body). The eclipses show these things thrown wide open and our preconceptions/misconceptions exposed.

Are you attached to these shadows of behavior/experience/identity/accomplishment, thinking they are true – thinking they are the real thing? Well, Haa Haa, Hoo Hoo – The Ketu eclipse has news for you (aren’t I just a barrel of monkeys today!?!).

There is only one thing that is the real thing and it aint here on earth, or you could say it is dissolved into everything here on earth. Either way, there is no YOU in the truth.

As much as the earth is lovely and we are meant to experience joy, not until we experience, trust and follow that which is beyond earth can we actually play in the shadows, rather than be consumed by them.

Imagine that, playing with your deepest terrors and fears,.. like public speaking, catching a partner cheating on you, waking up during eyeball surgery with no anaesthesia.

Can you do this?

Can you look your shadows in the eye?

Amma says “meditation is more precious than gold”. Looking inward toward the true nature of Self is needed no more than ever. During a Solar eclipse that is the best thing for you.

Astrologically speaking, I think we must evolve beyond the prehistoric, fearful “eclipse” mindset and see the Nodes as the deeper energy currents that connect to our celestial, universal nature. Eclipses throws our illusion of stability into doubt – revealing the shadows and inner demons that are consuming us and wasting our time. Mastering this, we are pointed to the inner world beyond the many dualities of form.

In that Loka (realm) there exists only the light of the the infinite, cosmic Sun.

I love all the planets in Vedic astrology, including the Nodes. I think they are all forces of divine intelligence, love and wisdom. How could they NOT be?

Just the same, let’s remember the Sun around 12-1PM  Pacific on eclipse day as he will be dark and he does not like that. He wants to give and give and give.

Gayatri Mantra:
Om Bhur Bhuvah Swaha
Tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Deemahi
Dhiyo yonah Prachodayat

“We meditate on the glory of that Being who has produced this world; may He enlighten our minds.”

Hari Om

portantly, Jupiter is casting a very favorable aspect on transiting Mercury at the precise moment of the eclipse. The trinal aspects of Jupiter confer gurus grace, blessings and wisdom. Both Jupiter and Mercury will be in water signs, adding luck and skill to issues related to water, emotion.

I know many astrologers consider eclipses to be negative, I don’t necessarily. I see them more as rolls of the dice. Often, the stakes are raised and certain karmic issues get pushed the point of crisis and/or redemption. They can show big winners and big losers.

I am in total alighnment with what you said about this eclipse pattern and the headlines in the news really being just an outward mirror of what we should be examining about ourselves on the inside. Bravo! Very well written!

    Bravo Sadasiva!

I'm glad you are highlighting this eclipse in positive context. I welcome it as such. It's been 2 weeks (at least) coming wherein the energy builds and builds and for a while I was quite overwhelmed.

I'll do my prayers/ritual around noon today and pull in our entire spiritual community.

New beginnings, release old tyrannical patterns, sparkling clean templates!

    SADA SHIVOM.

and soften..i keep thinking about the women that was offended by the $4 chai that was brewed and made available to raise funds for the hospital in nepal, her heart was hardened so much so that she went to whole foods to save herself 1.50 before kirtan!!..a sad glimpse of humanity in what is believed to be a conscious part of america.

on a lighter note..thanks for all your help!

    LOL…a cuban hooker!……HAHAHAHAHAHA!

ok…ahem….deep breath….Beautifully written, Sam. Moon and Mercury exchanging did very well for you in this writing.

I will say Gayatri mantra at noon if I can stop laughing.

Thanks for your wisdom and humor!

  7. Sasha says:

    Hi Sam,

What do you think of Mars being in the same degree as Moon and Sun. Does that say anything more about Solar Eclipse?

  8. Brenda says:

    Dear Sam,

Your analysis of the eclipses is really helpful. I have wondered if eclipses effect individuals since some astrologers say they only pertain to mundane events. From my observation they do seem to effect individuals as well.

For example, this eclipse was in the Nakshatra of Punarvasu which is ruled by Aditi, the mother of the gods. Its meaning is 'the return of light.' The mother figure in my life had surgery yesterday to remove cataracts. She had waited so long that she really couldn't see anymore. For her it was really the return of the light.

In addition to the mundane events you mentioned I thought I would add one. Yesterday was midterm election day in Japan. The ruling Democratic party (the more liberal party) suffered a major defeat and lost the lower house of parliament. I would think holding an election (they had a choice as to when to hold the election) on an eclipse day is not a good idea if you want to hold onto power. Interestingly, the Democratic party won the election back in August 2009 after some 40 years of Liberal Democratic Party rule (the more conservative party). This happened right as Venus was crossing the eclipse point that occurred on July 22, 2009 and was visible in Japan.

Anyway sorry for the long post.

    HI SAM,

A bit of inspiration on Sunday. Slight concentration

of energy surrounding hopes and possible goals coming together. Slight confusing communication and disturbances about the time of the eclipses. It seem to come out of nowhere. However, ultimately became a opportunity for compassion and understanding, work things out. This must be related o the Mercury and Moon exchange in their signs. Mercury in Cancer and Moon in Gemini. Interesting, I never analyzed in this way. Also Mercury in Cancer receiving grace from its trine from Jupiter in Pisces, both water signs. Overall Sunday was a hopeful and somewhat sunny day. Better here than its been in several weeks.

    Hope things are going well!

    Many Thanks,

    Wende

    Dear Sam,

This is a fabulous article. Thankyou for putting these thoughts and concepts into words.

I especially loved the way you ask us to identify these worldly events inside our own minds and conscience – a masterly stroke.

And the answer is always meditation – thankyou for the reminder and encouragement.

You know – I always see Ketu and Saturn to an extent in many of the homeless people that cross my path, who ask for money(as a classical musician there have been periods where homelessness wasn't that far away for myself). I'm a magnet for these people, and happily so – my Guru is in the twelth house in Sagittarius – whenever I contact them I verbally bless them, out of their earshot. I'm asking whoever may read this reply today to join me in doing the same.Asking the divine to bless people who may be helpless, is a really powerful way of recognising the energies of Ketu and Saturn in a manner that brings healing for everyone. I know that it's just a matter of time before Life lifts these people up as well.

Sam , you're a miracle – thanks for including us in your consciousness.

    Dean Sky-Lucas
