This is because the next two months will be Saturn cycles,, Meaning the Sun and moon will be coming together in saturn signs (Capricorn and Aquarius) – underscoring the exalted Saturn energy.
Mars is now retrograde and still in Leo – so he is very prominent as planets get Chesta bala (motional strength) when retrograde. One thing about retrograde planets is that we need to keep putting effort into them and trying again and again with them, when retrograde. So this is the case with Mars now.
This continued effort leads to improvement and is one reason retrograde MALEFICS are *good* (I hate making such simple statements though).
The malefics are the energy we use to improve our difficult circumstances. Mars through courage and discipline – Saturn through growing up and facing the truth, then being determined to stay on course to see things through.
Mars – Saturn Video (From India) Below
I had an interesting dialogue with someone over this. Read it Below:
Q: You say that Mars gives us the discipline to do the things we know we should do – get up early, practice asana, yoga, etc.
A: YES because we know those things make us strong and not doing them make us weak .. simple, black and white: MARS
Q: It seems to me like Shani has to have some role in this – it seems like Mars gives us the energy and courage to want to approach these things,
A: YES, because of what I said above.. we are only as strong as what we put into practice.
Q: and of course some physical stamina to endure them on that level,
A: “physical stamina” is saturn. Mars is the energy in the moment. endurance is saturn – HE rules the muscles. (mamsa)
Q: but Mars is also a bit “off the handle” when things get tough,
A: When he is weak our energy in the moment is like this, yes.
Q: which seems like that is when Shani enters stage left and gives us the dedication, organization, perseverance and ability to keeeeeeeeppp going.
A: Saturn gives us the awareness of consequences, the embarrassment, feeling foolish, looking stupid for these actions.. shame and the awareness that we are weak and pain of that.
Q: That seems like the “discipline” part to me.
A: I consider discipline to be the strength and integrity of the moment, but if you call this discipline, then fine. I call it determination to keep at it – not just do it once then think we are really strong by shooting our mouth off and arguing about it.
Q: Shani gives us the ability to deal with the delays, the obstacles, the challenges that come up, and we need that energy to keep up with the routines of repetition that discipline requires,
A: ” to keep up with the routines of repetition that discipline requires,” OR ” to keep up with the routines of repetition that GROWTH requires, (the growth comes from the discipline to keep doing the right thing each moment, with each choice. The choice of each moment is between Mars (what is right) and Venus (what makes us happy). Mars gives the strength to make the choice based on what we know is right. Or you could say that a person’s Mars shows where they are on this scale of integrity – walking the talk.
Q: because any discipline is going to encounter numerous obstacles. I guess this is sort of the Capricorn part of Shani….
A: Yes and the main way we learn to do better with Mars mistakes is guilt and the awareness of mistakes, loneliness from destroying relationships, etc.. Capricorn ins the “feeling” of those mistakes and hurt it causes us and the guilt we feel over it that makes us stronger .. mainly to avoid that pain in the future. But avoidance of pain is a better motivator than the promise of pleasure.
Q: anyway, where am I missing the part of Mars that gives us discipline?
A: I look at it like this.. discipline is in the moment (mars) determination/structure/commitment/ awareness of consequences have to to with the past and future (Saturn).
Mars is exalted in Capricorn because we learn from our reckless mistakes of the moment.. (Mars is our energy in the moment directed toward a goal/result). The only way to ascend beyond just acting like an animal is to be aware of our mistakes, the pain they cause, etc. Because these things can literally threaten our survival (Saturn) we feel the pain of those mistakes and that makes us do better..
Thus, Mars exalted in Capricorn connects that impulsive animal energy with consequences, long-term thinking, self-preservation, sensitivity .. Conversely debilitated Mars in Cancer has the animal reacting to the emotions of the moment.. struggling to put their
principles into practice.

insightful conversation….thank you for posting. <3
Okay. I have been sitting with this SA vs. MA thing for a few days. The idea of discipline is really interesting – I always felt like, for me, my discipline worked like this: There was a moment in time I decided to do something – like meditate each morning – and that was it. Done. I wake up each day and do it. It never felt like I woke up each day and re-decided, in that moment, that I was going to sit to meditate. I think that is why I felt Shani in that area – it was just a long term commitment. But, I do see how that decision is, in some ways, made each day, whether I realize it or not. So…getting it – Mars in the moment, doing what makes us feel strong and vital…Shani giving determination and the reminder of what pain feels like when we don't do these things. Cool. I dig it.
Yes Kara,
That is really how it works. And remembering Mars gives the "strength" to actually *do* what we know is right / what makes us strong – our actions are always in the moment / a choice of that moment.
Shani then feels the peace of mind that results and says "I want to keep doing this / commit to it being a regular thing" / go deeper into it.
