The Law of Karma
There is a concept in Vedic astrology that has
to do with gentle (saumya) and cruel (kruura)
planets. Like many things, these qualities of
planets are often misunderstood. In more
fatalistic traditions or circles, the cruel
planets are seen as "punishing us"..
the gentle ones are seen as "rewarding
us". It certainly seems like life works
this way - so these simple explanations get a
lot of traction.
Mercury, Venus, Moon and Jupiter give us
money and children and romance and fun. Saturn
and Mars, the Sun and the Nodes bring fights and
fears, ego and confusion. So let's try to get as
much of the good ones as we can and avoid the
bad ones. Even if that is not expressly stated,
that is often the perspective of astrologers and
we all know it.
We either hear something like that, or the
opposite happens where, due to a distaste of
such things, ALL distinctions are blurred and
everything is just watered down and homogenized.
The "it is all good" approach..
"offend no one and inspire no one"
approach. Both miss the mark and turn astrology
into a system that often deepens the attachment
to ego and duality, rather than sheds an
illuminating light on it.
When we reconnect with the Law of Karma,
things get a lot easier to understand. The
planets do not punish you. Nothing as eternal
and wise would also be ultimately punishing and
hurtful. Yes the planets have a nature, and some
of them allow us to do the cruel things in life.
Mars, Saturn, The Sun and The Nodes are the
energies that allow us to do harsh things. For
instance, when we need to defend ourselves, Mars
is there. When we need to avoid problems or
learn from our mistakes, Saturn is there,
showing the truth behind our illusions - the
ones we have been running from.
They are also the parts of you that will work
hard, have courage, forebearance, commitment,
willingness to grow up and face things squarely
and many of your best virtues. Yes Mercury and
Jupiter give intelligence and wisdom. Venus and
the Moon give beauty and enjoyment, but they can
also make us waste time with trivia, get lost in
hopes and dreams and most insidious - spend most
of our life chasing pleasure at the expense of
truth.
For the most part, we are unbalanced. We run
to the gentle planets and seek to avoid the
cruel ones. Those great beings, who are balanced
and in the flow, are sensitive to the moment and
what is required and the appropriate Universal
energy to use.
Then there's the rest of us,... :)
We do not act according to what is needed in
the moment, we act through OUR projected agenda,
based on how the planets are arranged for us (in
the birth chart), the aggregate of which we call
our "Karma". The chart shows the
karma/pattern of illusion we are under and the
attractions and aversions that create the
difficulties in life, as our ego veils the
universal wisdom (the pure nature of the
planets) This veiling prevents us from entering
the moment, with the inner universe integrated,
able to act in accordance to what is needed. It
shows how we try to spin the game toward what we
want, and make the universe run according to our
laws, rather than by the universal laws already
here and that have created everything.
One of the most important "laws of the
land" is the law of "Karma". For
something so commonly referenced, it is crazy
how misunderstood it is.
Saturn is the main planet that allows us to
feel the effects of our karma. He shows us the
truth of things, including our mistakes, which
allows us to avoid them in the future (I will
give an update about retrograde Saturn in a few
days). But for now, ponder the nature of Karma..
